Health, Safety and Environmental Awareness (ROLO)
The ROLO training course, for those who work in landscape, horticulture, arboriculture, ecology and amenity industries. This ROLO course is online, however face to face sessions are possible too.
ROLO Training Course – Registration of Land Based Operatives
You will have found your way here to the ROLO health safety and environmental awareness course for many different reasons, for example, you:
- are looking to work on a new contract and need to evidence site safety
- need a new CSCS card as a result of your old card expiring
- have started a new job
- need to access a worksite as a land based operative
Therefore as a worker in the land based sector, you need both the appropriate CSCS card and ROLO qualification. To show your awareness of roles, responsibilities, hazards and risks on a work site.
We do appreciate that this is a course you are being told to do, which is never a good start for any course. However, we will endeavour to make the course as relevant as possible to you no matter your sector. By using specific examples within your sector. Along with injecting elements of humour as we go through the course. Understandably a health and safety course is a serious matter, but it does not need to be boring!
The ROLO – Operatives (Registration of Land Based Operatives) is for anyone in the land based sector. The scheme applies to self-employed, employees of companies or labour only.
As a result, if you work in the following industries, the ROLO training course applies to you:
- Arboriculture
- Amenity
- Ecology and environmental management
- Countryside management
- Pesticides
- Landscape construction and horticultural landscape maintenance
Our ROLO course has now gone online. But most importantly do not worry we will talk you through everything you need to do. It is a simple and straight forward way to carry out your ROLO course.
In short, it saves you:
- travelling time
- fuel costs
- an early start if you are not local to the area of Settle
Once you have booked onto the ROLO course online, we will send you full course joining instructions. That will contain a Zoom link so you can learn everything you need via a conference type call with the trainer in front of you.
You will need to register on the ROLO course online portal and tell us when you have. So we can allocate you to your course date. You will then go back and login to the portal where you will find you have access to the:
- course resources (editable PDFs or printable versions)
- the assessment section
It is as simple as 1.2.3, honestly!
A ROLO training course, all done from the comfort of your own home or workplace – how amazing is that!
To access the course you will need to have a device with webcam and microphone, the trainer has to be able to see and hear you at all times. A laptop is preferred, a tablet is the minimum requirement.

- your roles and responsibilities under health and safety
- the roles and responsibilities of your employer

The online ROLO training course has now been updated to run over one day with the exam at the end of that day. This is possible from June 2021, prior to this for the last 12 months, it was to be covered over two half days. Please be prepared to attend the full session and ensure you have all the equipment to do so.
At the end of the session on the second day. You will sit a multiple-choice exam, where you need to get at least 75% (27 out of 35) to achieve ROLO accreditation.
You can complete a follow-up assessment immediately if you score 25 or 26 out of 35. If you score 24 or less, training and assessment will be reset for a future date.
On completing the ROLO health and safety awareness course you can purchase an ID card from BALI which is valid for five years. LISS/CSCS card. Subsequently, you can put other relevant training courses on the back of the ID card too. For example, pesticides, chainsaw, tree climbing, brushcutters, ride-on mowers.
If you are planning to add other relevant training to the back of your ID care, you need to ensure that the courses were either:
- taken in the last five years
- or you have attended an accredited refresher course with either another accredited awarding body or FISA. City and Guilds do not have an accredited refresher, the only way to have City and Guilds is to retake the assessment. However, no matter what happens you can’t lose your original qualification.
Without both the ROLO and CSCS elements as a land based operative you may not be able to access work sites.
The ROLO training course is about not only keeping you safe on sites but others working in and around the area.
Many of you are already actively working on some sites, however you may have discovered that as a professional site operator, you need a certificate of competence and ID card to enable you to carry on doing so.
You may have been asked by:
- your quality assurance body
- your employer
- or a new contract opportunity to demonstrate competence through certification
You could be new to the job or been doing it for over 40 years and things have changed, if so and you are faced with having to gain your ROLO qualification have you been:
- Struggling to find the right fit in terms of training provider?

- Worried you will get it wrong or waste you hard earned money?
- Concerned that it will feel like going back to school?
